Q24 What is the IRONMAN UK Anti-Doping policy?
A24 Due to the recent increase in drug-related incidents the WTC is now acting in accordance with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) international standard and code for doping-related circumstances. IRONMAN UK will be following these guidelines in ALL events from 2006 onwards. The guidelines are as follows: If an athlete’s A and B sample shows positive results (or Adverse Analytical Findings) for any of the prohibited substances (S1-S5, The World Anti-Doping Code 2005 Prohibited List, International Standard) at a sporting event with a WADA-recognized testing facility, Ironman will issue a provisional suspension to the athlete beginning on the date the athlete competed and/or was drug-tested. Until a verdict between the athlete and their federation/national governing body (NGB) has been reached, the athlete will be unable to compete in any Ironman events worldwide. If an athlete is found guilty or accepts a suspension/penalty from their federation/NGB, Ironman will issue its own suspension based on WADA guidelines. For a first offence, the athlete will be suspended and ineligible for a period of two years from the date the athlete competed and/or was drug-tested. If an athlete receives a second doping offence, Ironman will issue a lifetime ban and the athlete will be ineligible to compete in any future Ironman event. (WADA Article 10.2, Sanctions on Individuals) This testing will impact professional and age group athletes and concerns the top ten male and female finishers. Prize money will be paid after the results of doping tests are announced.

Q25 Why do we have a Race Breifing?
A25 The purpose of the race briefing is to inform athletes of any last minute news and information in regard to the course and the race. It is not an area to go over the rules of the race, the feed stations or any of the information contained in any of the FAQ’s contained above. The better prepared the athlete the shorter the race briefing needs to be.

Q26 What are the drafting Rules?

Q27 Will there be an IRONKIDS Event at the 2010 IRONMAN UK and UK IRONMAN 70.3 Events?
A27 IRONKIDS is the offical children's event that is solely licenced and fully owned by the WTC. Many global offical IRONMAN events hold IRONKIDS childrens events as part of their weekends of festivities. In previous years IRONMAN UK has held a very successful official WTC sactioned IRONKIDS event at their Dorset venue. This event has been successfully organisated and run by the IRONMANU UK Race Office team and has been enjoyed by many attending families. Due to the new 2009 IMUK venue there will be no WTC sactioned IRONKIDS event for this season. But it is hoped to re-introduced the WTC childrens IRONKIDS event for 2011 and beyond. With regard to the UK IRONMAN 70.3 event, an offical WTC sanctioned IRONKIDS event was launched and organised a number of years ago by the IRONMAN UK Race Office - but entry figures from the children were disappointingly low and so the event had to be cancelled just a matter of weeks out from race day. This was dissappointing at the time. However the IRONMAN UK Race Office may well have another try at enticing children to enter such an offical WTC childrens event, organised by the same IMUK Race Office team, at a future date.

Q28 What sports drink will be provided on the Feed Stations?
A28 The sports drink provided will be Gatorade Thirst Quencher. In line with past years, Gatorade supply this drink to IRONMAN UK in a powder format. The powder will be mixed on Race Day as a 6% solution - as recommended by Gatorade - and based on Gatorade research. Gatorade themselves also attend the IMUK event each year and ensure that each IMUK Feedstation is instructed on the precise amount of powder needed to achieve this 6% solution. This hands-on Gatorade tuition is combined with a series of written instructions that are provided to each Aid Station Captain and his/her teams to ensure the Gatorade remains consistent throughout Race Day. The flavour supplied by Gatorade is usually Orange - but this can change depending on what our sponsors Gatorade supply us with.

Q29 What are the rules about crossing the Finish Line with your family?
A29 Our governing body, the WTC, recently informed us, along with all other official IRONMAN events around the globe, that athletes are not allowed to be accompanied down the finish shute and acorss the finish line with family members. As the WTC are our governing body we will be following this new ruling.

Q30 Will there be an Official IMUK Sweep vehicle?
A30

It is the athletes responsibility to ensure they are equipped with adequate tools, spares and mechanical knowledge should any mechanical situation occur with their own cycle. There will be an IMUK Sweep Vehicle operating around the bike course which will have a mechanic and spares available. Please note that this IMUK Sweep Vehicle is not available for 'rapid response' to athletes experiencing mechanical difficulties. The IMUK Sweep Vehicle is there as a last resort to enable athletes to at least get back to the main Transition area. Competitors must not accept any help from friends/supporters with any mechanical failures. Competitors must not accept any replacement equipment from any non-competitors. Acceptance of such help will result in disqualification.

Q31 Will Special Needs bags be available at IMUK?
A31 As per previous IMUK events there will be two Special Needs Zones. Athletes need to provide their own bags for this purpose. The Special Needs bags must be dropped off at the Special Needs Drop Zone at the Resevoir Transition Area on Race Day morning, between the hours of 04.15am - 05.15am. Athletes must drop these bags into the required areas themselves. It is the Atheletes responsibility to ensure they drop their correct bags in the correct Drop Zone - one zone will be for the bike course and another zone will be for the run course! These two Drop Zones will be clearly marked. It is the athletes responsibility to pack their own Special Needs bags and hand them into the designated Drop Off Zones within the correct time scale. Your Special Needs Bags must be clearly marked with your race number and your name, and easily identifiable to yourself as you will be picking the bag from the designated Special Needs Zones yourself. It is your responsibility to ensure that the race number does not come off etc. Please note that you will be more than catered for by the official IMUK Feed Stations with regard to race nutrition - Special Needs Bags should be used for those items the feedstations cannot provide you with - such as contact lens/spare glasses/medication. Unclaimed Special Needs Bags will be discarded after the event. IRONMAN UK is not responsible for any of the contents. Although IRONMAN UK volunteers try to expedite assisting you in obtaining your Special Needs Bag(s) at the relevant Feed Stations, the volume of Competitors may require you to stop and find your own Special Needs bag(s).

Q32 What is outside assistance?
A32 IRONMAN UK is an individual event. No individual support vehicles or non-competitor escort cyclists or runners are allowed on any part of the race course. Teamwork as a result of outside assistance that provides an advantage over single competitors is not allowed. Ample IRONMAN UK feedstations are available. Ample official IRONMAN UK road marshalls, Police, Raynet, security, volunteers and cycle outriders will be on the course to ensure the safety of all competitors at all times. Individual support vehicles or non-competitor escort runners or cyclists will result in disqualification. A non-competitor escort runner or cyclist includes any competitors who have withdrawn from the race, been disqualified or have finished the race. Friends, family members, coaches or supporters of any type may not drive, cycle or run alongside competitors, may not pass food or other items to competitors and should be warned to stay completely clear of all competitors to avoid disqualification. It is incumbent upon each competitor to reject immediately any attempt to assist, follow or escort.
